Stay-at-home dad aka, stay at home father, house dad, SAHD, househusband, or house-spouse, is a term used to describe a father who is the main parenting /caregiver of the children and the household!!

The current economic crisis worldwide has seen this practice of fathers assuming the less traditional role of 'stay at home parent',  become more common. Fathers now must not only possess the skills necessary to provide a safe, nuturing environment at home, but also, in the process of doing so , overcome deep-seated traditional gender stereotyping. 

Traditionally, here in the Caribbean, in most families, both parent worked together as a unit, with the father becoming the breadwinner and the mother the care-giver. In the 1830s, however, and more recently, this duty became more open, with more and more women entering the workforce, as they too struggle to break traditional gender roles and bias. 

Women re-assumed the caregiver position after the war, but, major cultural shift, together with the subsequent birth of the feminist movement, advances in birth control, and their new found independence, changed the traditional structure of the family unit.

While some women chose to return  to their care giver role, a significant amount chose to pursue careers, outside of the home, creating a huge need for alternative childcare! These childcare options were sometimes, unavailable, or unattractive, or expensive!!
